The Healing of the Mind: Part 3 The Mind Must Be Renewed

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

A second correction which must be made for the healing of the mind: the mind must be renewed. This is needed by every child of God. It is only through the renewing of the mind that the life is transformed.

The mind is the outlet of the spirit. The Holy Spirit, who dwells in the human spirit, needs the mind as a channel for expression. He can only work through a mind which is in tune with Him. While the mind is changed in connection with becoming a child of God, the darkness of its former state remains in greater or lesser degree. To the extent that the darkness remains, it is susceptible to the promptings of evil spirits rather than the Holy Spirit. So the mind must be renewed. It is renewed only to the extent that the light of truth penetrates it and in the measure a person is able to apprehend the truth and walk in it.

Various deficiencies in the lives of Christians can be cited as evidence that the mind needs to be renewed. One is the inability to retain spiritual truths. When a mind has a tenacity for facts in the natural life  but is unable to retain spiritual truths, it is in need of being renewed. The example can be cited of a housewife who has no difficulty in remembering her recipes but Bible teachings quickly escape her. Or the husband who can remember the batting average of his favorite baseball player and can not remember what was preached to him a half hour ago. It is not difficult to embarrass people by questioning them concerning the content of a sermon they have recently heard. They will usually be able to give only the most indefinite answers concerning the message.

The inability to put into practice what was learned also indicates an un-renewed mind. Closely akin to this is the inability to transfer truths to others. Many Christians have studied the Bible for years and have heard volumes of sermons, yet they have difficulty conveying to others even the most elementary teachings. This inability to serve the Lord indicates that the mind is a blocked channel through which the Holy Spirit is unable to work.

Prejudice against truth which is not understood is another evidence of the need for the renewing of the mind. Such prejudice is an activity of the old mind, which is enmity against God.

The renewing of the mind is a correction that the child of God needs to have in daily operation. Just as the pull of gravity tends to keep us earth bound, the pull of the flesh tends to draw the mind back into darkness. The mind that is neglected tends to become narrow, stubborn, and obstinate. God is able and willing to renew the mind so that it becomes crystal clear.

The results of the renewing of the mind are much to be desired. Through it the mind becomes receptive so that God’s law can be written in it. “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” Hebrews 10:16. It gives one the ability to discern that which is spiritual. “For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” 1 Corinthians 2: 11-13. The eyes of the understanding is enlightened so that spiritual truth is illuminated. “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints,”  Ephesians 1: 18. The life is transformed to become like Christ Himself. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Romans 12:2.  “For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 2:16.Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Philippians 2: 5-8. The mind becomes a vehicle for the Holy Spirit, and the good and perfect will of God is proven in the life.

How then is this very necessary correction in the accomplished in the healing of the mind? Here are the steps involved:

A Complete Surrender to God. The teaching concerning the renewing of the mind follows immediately after the command to present the body as a living sacrifice to God. “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.” Romans 12:1. Many a Christian has discovered a new clarity of mind with regard to spiritual truths after has completely surrendered himself to God.

Submit the Mind to the Surgery of the Cross. We are commanded to put off the old man and be renewed in the spirit of our mind. that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,” Ephesians 4:22-23. It is at the cross of Christ that the old man has been crucified. “knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” Romans 6:6. “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” Galatians 5:24. It is well to make this affirmation: “I claim for my mind the full deliverance accomplished through Christ’s death upon the cross.”

A Deliberate Choice Regarding Your Mind Must Be Made. Choose that the mind be removed from the real of the natural and from the control of satan and brought into the realm of the spiritual and under the influence of God. Here is an affirmation to make in this correction: “I choose to take my mind from the sphere of the flesh and from the control of satan. I choose to place my mind in the realm of the spirit to be energized and directed by the Holy Spirit of God.”

Steep the Mind in the Word of God. Make much use of the Bible. Read it and study it regularly and systemically. Commit portions of it to memory. Meditate upon its truths, claims and its promises, and obey its commands.

The renewing of the mind is not a correction which can be made once for all. It is rather a continuing process and a work to which a person should daily lay claim. With the presence of the world, the devil, and our own flesh, it is always possible for the darkness to spread and for the old mind once again to be manifested.

The scripture above is my  true north when it comes to my writings. I have always been told to write books and sell them. But most of what I write has to do with the Word of God and therefore they are not my own revelation. My writings come from revelation given to me as I search out the Word of God by the Spirit of God. They are the “children’s bread” (Matthew 15:26). I believe that this bread should be given out freely so that my Father’s children, my brother’s and sisters are fed, nurtured and strengthened. For that reason this blog as well as others have been created.

Concerning the things that pertain to this life I trust the Lord and His Word:

Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days.  Ecclesiastes 11: 1

For the Scripture says, “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain,” and, “The worker is worthy of his wages.” 1 Timothy 5:18

Take no bag for the road, or second tunic, or sandals, or staff; for the worker is worthy of his provisions. Matthew 10:10

If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much for us to reap a material harvest from you? 1 Corinthians 9:11

One who is taught the word must share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:6-10
