One of the areas of failure for a person manifesting their healing that I encounter often is in the area of failing to receive. It may sound simple, but healing needs to be received personally. We need to realize that the redemptive work of the cross, in the shed Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, paid the price for the forgiving of sin as well as the healing of our whole being, spirit, soul and body. Like I said, it needs to be received, not just assumed.
I liken it to our being born-again. When I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I took note of that date, as I knew something wonderful had taken place and that I was not the same man I was before – I was forgiven. I had become, as the Bible said, a new creature in Christ Jesus. And I found out that I had become an heir of God and a joint heir with Jesus Christ! For me that date was and is still very special.
Now I don’t have to continue asking the Lord to save me. I am already saved. And if the devil would try to convince me other wise, I would simply remind him that on the morning of September 3, 1976, I received Jesus Christ into my heart! That settles it, conversation over!!! I know this as a fact within myself because the Word of God tells me so, therefore it’s already a done deal. And of course, since that time I’ve grown and matured within my relationship with the Lord as a child of God.
Healing is received the same way. It actually is one in the same as the above example, because when you have the removal of the curse or sin barrier in a persons life, who is now a believer, you have removed the right for the curse, which is the product of the original sin allowed by Adam, to continue in that persons life. In Isaiah 53 you will find a wonderful description of what Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross purchased for us. There are two distinct gifts that were acquired for us: forgiveness of sin and healing or wholeness for our body, soul and spirit. For a detailed look at this take a look at our article Two Gifts of Grace.
This act of Jesus going to the cross and shedding His Blood was an enacting or ‘cutting’ of a covenant with God the Father in His own Blood. And to simplify what’s been given to us through this covenant, Jesus is saying to those who are born-again: “all that I AM and all that I HAVE has already been given to you.” Wow! That is powerful.
All throughout the world we celebrate this covenant by the taking of communion in our churches. In fact, Jesus told us to do it often as a remembrance. He knew that we would forget or lose sight of the blessings He purchased for us if we did not. In communion there are two elements, the wine or juice which symbolizes His Blood that was shed for us for the forgiveness of sin, and the bread which symbolizes His life, His body, broken and bruised for us. ‘For by His stripes we are healed’ Isaiah 53:5
In fact, the word in the Greek for communion is koinonia (koy-nohn-ee’-ah). And it means intimate partnership and fellowship. This is an exact description of the covenant we have entered into, the right to all that He has, and all that He is! And in true covenant understanding, you must realize that He has already given it, the decision has already been made. All we need to do to access it is to receive it by faith, believe and not let go.
Who is He? Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life! (John 14:6) Then He said in the latter part of John 10:10, I have come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly! The word in the Greek for life in both verses is Zoe (dzo-ay’). And the word literally means in these scriptures: life that is the highest and best of which Christ is.
Jesus is saying, I have come to give you the best of who I am and what I have, and My will is that you would experience it to the full. This is a good time to take a minute and just shout a few “hallelujahs” and a loud “praise the Lord!”
Therefore, when we take communion, this is what we should have in mind. I guarantee, you will never take communion the same again after reading this. Communion will now become alive for you, because you have an understanding about what I call the covenant meal.
Communion is so powerful, that Paul uses some very descriptive wording when describing it, bringing about further clarity. Let’s take a look at 1 Corinthians 10:16. The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
The cup of blessing! If you do a word study on the word blessing in both the Hebrew and the Greek, you will find that it means: empowerment for success, great prosperity and an attitude of joy because of it. Isn’t that what we’ve just learned that Jesus did for us when He went to the cross?! Truly, the communion cup is the cup of blessing, all that He is and all that He has is already given to us, and has given us the right of intimate partnership and fellowship in it!
Think of it, Jesus has no sickness or disease or lack. He is the purest of pure, the best of the best, and He is inviting us to partner with Him in His abundant life.
And if you’re still a bit fuzzy on it, take a look at Galatians 3:13, Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us ( for as it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’).
To see what you’ve been saved to and redeemed from read through Deuteronomy 28. This describes the blessings and the cursings. See especially verse 61 if you are dealing with sickness or disease. According to these verses, sickness and disease are illegal in your body, and more so now under the New Covenant, because of what Jesus did for us on the cross.
Now, I know I have given you a lot to chew on here. However, I am going to tie it all together on how to receive your healing by faith through communion.
First, I suggest reading through the Healing Scriptures Page. Take time to ponder and think about and take to heart what the Word of God is saying regarding the will of God for your healing. Then when you become convinced that healing belongs to you, then you are ready to proceed.
Get a small piece of bread (any type will do) and pour a small cup of juice (grape or whatever you have.) Get before the Lord with the understanding you now have regarding communion and begin to praise Him for all that He’s done. Take some time to just love on Him and worship Him as your Savior, Lord and Healer. You may want to read some healing scriptures, thanking Him for the precious promises in His Word.
Then tell Him that you receive Him as your healer, and on this day, you are receiving the healing He has already provided on the cross for your particular situation. Then eat the bread, realizing it represents His taking the stripes upon His back for your healing.
Then drink the juice, remembering it is representative of His Blood shed for you for the forgiveness of sin and the access point for you to become a child of God. Then rejoice!
Now write down the date that you received your healing by faith, having settled it over communion. There’s no need to ask again, if you’ve received it already. And if the devil comes to your mind with doubt, if symptoms still persist days later, telling you that you’re not going to get healed, just tell him you already are!
Let him know he’s too late, as you have already received it by faith over communion and quote the date! “Devil, on this day _____ I received my healing, the work of Jesus on the cross, it’s alreay mine – now GET OUT OF HERE In Jesus’ Name. Do this anytime doubt tries to take hold. It will bring peace to your soul as you reflect on the covenant promises and how you entered in through communion.
I received healing for hay fever this very way. I was head usher in our church at the time, and every year since I was a child, beginning in the spring, hay fever would plague me throughout the summer months. I carried pills with me where ever I went. My face would swell up and my eyes would itch, my throat would itch, I would sneeze over and over again, my nose would profusely run and I would be feeling absolutely miserable.
Then one day as I was serving communion to the congregation, the Lord whispered to me, “You know this represents all I have done for you in the covenant through My Blood. There’s no better time to receive healing than right now as you celebrate the communion meal.”
Right there in the aisle, after serving the congregation and as the Pastor was about to pray, I took the bread and said, “Lord I realize you paid the price for my healing on the cross, and right now I receive healing for this hay fever and I settle it right now.” And then I took the cup, “Lord I receive the forgiveness of sin through the shedding of Your Blood and realize I am Your child, and this represents the covenant, and you have already given the blessing – I receive it!” I then took note of the date.
Sure enough, that day and for the next couple of days, hay fever kept trying to take hold. But I kept saying, “No, No, NO! You have to go! I am already healed, and on this date I received my healing by faith. I refuse to allow hay fever to stay. I am a child of God and this doesn’t belong to me. The blessings of the Lord are mine and I will have them!” I dug in like a bull dog and refused to let it go, since I received it by faith over communion.
Well, that was about many, many years ago, I’ve lost count! And let me tell you, it sure is a blessing to not have to deal with that any more! Get before the Lord and honor Him through communion, and settle the fact of your healing and mark down the day, receiving it by faith! It’s yours. Don’t let the devil or doubt keep you from your covenant blessing any longer. You are the healed of the Lord!
